Genuine 3M™ Thinsulate™ Acoustic Insulation SM600L

3M™ Thinsulate™ Acoustic Insulation SM600L is a lightweight, compressible, non-woven acoustic absorber developed for Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) management in vehicles.

Its web combines extremely fine polypropylene fibers with polyester staple fibers. The fine polypropylene fibers provide sound-absorbing performance at low weight, while the polyester fibers strengthen the web. A black polyolefin scrim protects the fibers on one side.

SM600L can be easily trimmed and converted to fit irregular cavities, panels, and production patterns. It is well suited for automotive interiors, camper vans, RVs, commercial vehicles, sleeper cabs, and other applications where acoustic performance, low weight, and conformability are important.

How SM600L Works

SM600L uses a blend of extremely fine polypropylene fibers and polyester staple fibers to create a lightweight acoustic web. As sound energy enters the material, interaction with the dense fiber network helps reduce reflected airborne noise within the vehicle cavity.

The material is compressible and conformable, allowing it to fit around wiring, structural ribs, curves, and other irregular surfaces. After unpacking, compressed material will gradually recover toward its nominal loft. Nominal thickness is measured by 3M under defined test conditions and may not be reached immediately after shipping or in every installed cavity.

For typical van applications, the white fiber web is commonly placed against the vehicle surface and the black protective scrim faces the vehicle interior. Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions and confirm that the selected attachment method is suitable for the substrate, temperature range, and application.
