3M™ Thinsulate™ Acoustic Insulation SM600L is a lightweight, non-woven insulation that absorbs road noise and keeps your van comfortable. Fine microfibers absorb high-frequency sound, while thicker fibers give it structure and loft. Lengths ship as pre-cut 10 ft sections for easy handling, or choose a full pre-cut kit for your van.
Ships compressed: SM600L comes off the roll about 1/2" to 3/4" thick. Install it compressed and it re-lofts.

Common Questions About SM600L
What is the R-value of 3M Thinsulate SM600L?
3M does not publish an R-value for SM600L. It is rated as an acoustic insulation, and its technical data sheet reports sound absorption, weight, thickness, flammability and temperature resistance rather than thermal resistance. Many van builders use it for both sound and thermal comfort, but we don't quote an R-value that 3M hasn't published.
What is SM600L made of?
A non-woven web of 65% ultra-fine polypropylene fibers, which absorb sound energy at low weight, and 35% polyester staple fibers, which add strength, with a black polypropylene scrim on one face. The fibers are hydrophobic, so they don't absorb water.
Does Thinsulate SM600L smell?
3M's Article Information Sheet lists SM600L as "odorless."
Is SM600L safe to use in a camper van?
3M classifies SM600L as an article, so it does not require a Safety Data Sheet, and under normal use 3M states it does not release a hazardous chemical. 3M's Regulatory Data Sheet states it meets EU RoHS limits, contains no Substance of Very High Concern above 0.1% by weight under EU REACH, and has no intentionally added PFAS. See the Regulatory Data Sheet and Article Information Sheet for 3M's full statements.
What adhesive should I use with SM600L?
We recommend 3M™ 90 spray adhesive, about one large can for every 20 linear feet of insulation. See the sizing table above for how many linear feet your van needs, or use our Thinsulate calculator.
